Graduate Program: Upcoming Events: Fall Graduate Forum
4pm, November 28, 2006 in Lunt 105
The Fall Quarter's Graduate Forum will be on the topic Ethics and mathematics research. The panelists will be announced later.
Some of the questions you may want to think about in advance of the event are:
- Someone just posted my thesis problem on the arXiv. What do I do?
- When should my advisor be a coauthor on my first paper?
- I thought of a key step in my thesis while talking to a friend/colleague/someone at the AMS Winter Meeting. Do I have to credit them in my Acknowledgements? Maybe I should ask them to be a joint author?
We welcome suggestions for other questions - send them to any of the panelists, or to the Director of Graduate Studies.
One of the motivations for holding this panel now is the recent controversy over the publication of the proof of the Poincaré Conjecture. Here is a short reading list, consisting of articles from the Bulletin of the AMS and the New Yorker, which illuminate this issue.
