``My intention is ... to equip myself, and perhaps them as well, for
a serious study of the Shimura varieties in higher dimensions. We
are in a forest whose trees will not fall with a few timid hatchet blows.
We have to take up the double-bitted axe and the cross-cut saw,
and hope that our muscles are equal to them.''
- Robert Langlands, 1979 |

The aim of the conference is to report on some of the recent
progress in the Langlands program. In its original conceptualization, the Langlands program dealt with automorphic forms, harmonic analysis on reductive groups, L-functions, and arithmetic. More recently, the scope of the program has enlarged, and includes aspects of the representation theory of loop groups, of algebraic geometry over both finite fields and the complex numbers, and of quantum field theory and string theory. The organizers hope that the talks at the conference will in their subject matter range broadly over these many different parts of the Langlands program. |
