International Conference on Partial Hyperbolicity

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PARTIAL HYPERBOLICITY

In honor of the 60th birthday of Charles Pugh

May 29 - June 2, 2001

GENERAL INFORMATION

There is a significant body of new research about partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. A number of breakthroughs have been made in the last few years and there are exciting new conjectures in the field, which are the subject of active research.

The goal of this conference is to bring together an international group of experts to:

  • lecture on new techniques in the field

  • bring their expertise together to work on the central conjectures in the area

  • expose this rapidly developing area of research to graduate students and young investigators


The conference will combine lectures on selected topics, aimed at the advanced graduate student, with informal afternoon collaborative sessions.

The conference is dedicated to Charles Pugh, who has been at the center of research in the area and who recently turned 60.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

Lecture series in the mornings will be devoted to the following topics:

  • Stable ergodicity and properties of conservative systems.

  • Statistical and mixing properties, S-R-B measures for p.h. diffeos.

  • Robust transitivity and topological properties of p.h. diffeos.



Afternoons will be largely unscheduled to allow for informal and collaborative work on the area.
In addition, the afternoon of Friday, June 1, will be devoted to talks on the work of Charles Pugh.

REGISTRATION


The facilities that are available for this conference can accommodate no more than 60 people. Participants will be registered on a first come, first served basis.

FUNDING


Funds are available to offset the costs of travel and accommodation. Priority will be given to graduate students, young investigators, and women and underrepresented minority groups.
Funding for this conference has been provided by the National Science Foundation, the Northwestern University Office of the Vice President for Research, the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and the Northwestern Mathematics Department.


TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATIONS


Please keep in mind that due to NSF policies it is much easier for us to support travel if it is done with a US carrier.

We will reserve accommodations for you, if you request it. To help defray costs, you may opt to share a room with another participant. We have reserved a block of rooms at two hotels in the area:
  • The Homestead Hotel: 1625 Hinman Avenue, Evanston. 1-847-475-3300.

    Located 2 blocks south of the Northwestern campus, the Homestead is a "European-style" (few amenities) guest house. We have reserved a block of rooms under "Partial Hyperbolic Dynamics." Rates are $95/night (single occupancy) and $105/night (double occupancy). Some rooms have 2 twin beds, some double beds, and some queens.


  • The Hampton Inn: 5201 Old Orchard Road, Skokie. 847-583-1111.

    The Hampton Inn and Suites/Chicago North Shore is located in the nearby town of Skokie. This is a newly-built "American-style" hotel with amenities. The hotel will offer shuttle service to and from the University during the conference. Single or double rooms run $89/night. Double rooms may be shared. Rooms are held under the name "Northwestern University Math Department."

  • Local information: including travel to and from the airports, other accomodations in the area, maps, etc.
