About the Department
Welcome to northwestern university's Mathematics Department
The language of mathematics is logical reasoning; its fundamental mode of discourse is creating and explaining proofs. Mathematics is an indispensable tool in the physical sciences, engineering and commerce, and central to the social sciences and humanities. Mathematicians value clarity and originality of argument and the capacity to resolve challenging questions which originate either in applications or within mathematics itself. Above all, mathematicians esteem the ability to formulate and apply insights that open new vistas. Mathematics, like poetry or sculpture, values elegance and beauty. Northwestern University's Mathematics Department is centrally located in historic Lunt Hall on the Evanston campus.
