Valentino Tosatti was awarded a 2012 Sloan Research Fellowship.

Department Assistant Cheryl Albiniak won a WCAS Meteor Award for Excellence in a New Position. Graduate Program Assistant Melanie Rubin was recognized for 35 years of service in WCAS.

Senior Ewain Gwynne has been awarded the Fletcher URG Prize for summer research conducted with Professor Elton Hsu.

This 2012-13 Mark and Joanna Pinsky Lectures will be delivered by Andrei Okounkov on May 1-3, 2013.

Eric Zaslow has been awarded a Charles Deering McCormick Professorship of Teaching Excellence for 3 years starting in Fall 2012.

The math department set a new record for majors and minors in 2012 --265. We graduated 77 majors and minors at 2012 commencement.

Graduate student Boris Hanin was honored with Mathematics Department Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for 2011-12.

Owen Gwilliam received the Best Thesis Award of 2011-12 for his thesis titled "Factorization algebras and free field theories."

Boris Hanin received the Gelfand Award of 2011-12 for impressive progress in his research and his contributions to department life.

Boas Assistant Professor Van Cyr and Visiting Lecturer Tim Ridenour were honored for Excellence in Teaching in 2011-12

Frank Calegari has been promoted to Full Professor.

John Alongi has been promoted to Distinguished Senior Lecturer.

Maria Stadnik is the recipient of an Outstanding Graduate Student Teaching Award in the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences for the academic year 2011-2012.

The math department has awarded its 2011-2012 Undergraduate Prizes.

Undergraduate Ziyang Xu was awarded a Freshman Seminar Writing Award for his paper, "Applications of Mathematics to Image Processing for Liver Surgery Planning."

Ingrid Daubechies was awarded the 2012 Frederic Esser Nemmers Prize in Mathematics for her numerous and lasting contributions to applied and computational analysis and for the remarkable impact her work has had across engineering and the sciences.

Congratulations to undergraduates Zeyu Wang, Xuchen Han and Yuxuan Chen for receiving Honorable Mention in the 2012 Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Kevin Costello has been named the Wayne and Elizabeth Jones Professor in Mathematics.

Congratulations to Northwestern's Putnam team, which ranked 32nd out of 572 participating institutions. Special applause to Benjamin Segal, Zeyu Wang and Ewain Gwynn who finished in the top 10% of the 4440 participants, and to Siyuan Cai, ranked 75.5, earning an honorable mention.

Staff member Nancy Hickey was awarded a Service Excellence Commendation by Northwestern University.

Austin Ford and Owen Gwilliam have been awarded NSF Postdoctoral Fellowships, starting in 2012-13.

Kevin Costello and Eric Zaslow have been named Simons Fellows in Mathematics for 2012-13.

The department congratulates former graduate student Young-Heon Kim, currently an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, on his receipt of the Andre-Aisenstadt Prize for 2012.

Frank Calegari will give an invited address at the 2012 Spring Central Section Meeting at the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
